CONTACT DETAILS Data custodian: University of Newcastle and University of Queensland Telephone: (02) 4042 0690 Email: info@alswh.org.au Web address: https://www.alswh.org.au/ DESCRIPTION The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) is a longitudinal population-based survey examining the health of over 57,000 Australian women in four cohorts born 1921-26, 1946-51, 1973-78, and 1989-95. Data are routinely linked to administrative datasets that cover primary healthcare, medicines, and allied health service use and hospital admissions. The study aims to identify the factors contributing to the physical and emotional health of women in Australia and to determine cause-and-effect relationships between women's health and a range of biological, psychological, social and lifestyle factors. The ALSWH has collected data concerned with violence and abuse across the life course, from childhood, through adulthood, and into older age. COLLECTION HISTORY Collection commenced: 1996 Break in series: None Other details: COLLECTION METHODOLOGY In 1996, women in three cohorts (born 1973-78, 1946-51, and 1921-26) were randomly selected from the Medicare database, which contains the name and address details of all Australian citizens and permanent residents. These women were sent an invitation to participate in the ALSWH, and more than 42,000 responded and agreed to participate. Women in the original three cohorts were surveyed approximately once every three years until 2011, when the oldest cohort began to complete surveys once every six months (the younger two cohorts continue to complete surveys every three years). In 2012-13, over 17,000 women born 1989-95 were recruited and completed surveys annually until 2016, when they began to complete surveys every two years. SCOPE AND COVERAGE The data are broadly representative of Australian women within each of the age groups, with some overrepresentation of women with a tertiary education and underrepresentation of women who do not have English as a first language. Women from rural and remote areas were oversampled. DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Family and domestic violence encompasses experiences in childhood and adulthood. Childhood experiences are measured by the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale (e.g. physical, emotional and sexual abuse, family dysfunction, witnessing domestic violence). Experiences in adulthood are measured by life experience scales, and domestic violence scales including the Community Composite Abuse Scale and abbreviated forms of the same (scales measure physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and harassment). Abuse in older age is measured by the Vulnerability to Abuse Screening Scale (including measures of exploitation, coercion). DEFINITION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE Sexual violence is measured by items that ask if women have ever been forced to take part in unwanted sexual activity. Sexual abuse in childhood is measured by the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale.
